Fortis was founded in 1912 by Walter Vogt. Twelve years after its founding, Vogt established the production with John Harwood, the inventor of the automatic watch. In 1926 Fortis published the patented Harwood Automatic, the first self-winding wristwatch, at Baselword. In 1937, Fortis recalled the 25-year company anniversary by producing and marketing its first chronographs, including the Rolls and the Authorist. The author was also designed by John Harwood and used the movement of the belt to supply the watch. In 1943 Fortis introduced the world’s first waterproof watches with the Fortissimo models, which became more and more popular.

In 1962, the Spacematic automatic was built under extreme conditions and temperature changes. The watch was tested by the seven members of a US space mission. In 1994, Fortis introduced strict durability tests. In the same year, the StarCity Training Center selected the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph as part of its equipment. Forti’s automatic wrist watches have demonstrated their ability to space inside and outside the space station’s protection.

Since 1994, Fortis has been the exclusive supplier of manned space missions approved by the Russian Space Agency. In 1997, the same watch, the Fortis Official Cosmonaut Chronograph, became the official watch of the German-Russian space mission MIR 97.
